‘To Prove I’m Not Forgot’ by Sylvia Barnard was launched at the Thackray Museum on 26th February. Around 30 people attended this happy event. Alun Pugh welcomed everyone and, in introducing Sylvia, told us how enjoyable and ‘readable’ he’d found it and how much he’d learned from her original book (previously published in 1991) as evidenced by his well-thumbed copy! Sylvia then spoke about her first visit to the Cemetery, being amazed at the history, geology and art she found there.
She went on to recount the ups and downs of saving the Cemetery from destruction then dereliction, and paid tribute to the current committee for continuing the work. She has kindly donated the author’s ‘commission’ of the book to the Friends. Lynda Kitching then spoke about the connection with another Friends group, - that of Roundhay Park, whose benefactor John Barran is buried in the dissenters’ side of the Cemetery. Alun presented a signed copy of the book to John Richards, Chairman of Friends of Roundhay Park for their new reference library in the Park’s Education Centre. We’re pleased to report that the book is selling steadily at the Thackray Museum and Leeds Civic Trust, whilst Alun has copies on sale when he does talks to various groups throughout the city. Do get in touch if you’d like a(nother) copy or order online from www.leedscivictrust.org.uk |
